25 Collections for 25 Years: Selections from the Iowa Women's Archives
The Louise Noun – Mary Louise Smith Iowa Women’s Archives opened to the public twenty-five years ago on October 28, 1992 at the University of Iowa Libraries.
This fall, the Iowa Women's Archives celebrates 25 years of gathering and illuminating the history of Iowa women with a series of events and exhibitions in 2017/2018.
The exhibition 25 Collections for 25 Years: Selections from the Iowa Women’s Archives features items from 25 of the more than 1100 collections in the Archives, providing a peek into the development and use of the Archives since 1992.
Items on display draw visitors into Iowa's history, revealing a state richly influenced by women of diverse interests and cultures. IWA's collections are frequently featured in University of Iowa classrooms, where faculty and students explore documents, photos, and other traces of Iowa women's legacies. Exhibition topics vary widely from army nurses serving in WWI to the rigors of farm life to activists for women's rights to the Latinx community of Iowa.
This exhibition is part of a series of events including a 25th anniversary celebration of the Iowa Women’s Archives in the Main Library and the Old Capitol Museum on November 10-11, 2017. During the summer of 2018, IWA will launch a traveling exhibition recognizing the long tradition of girls’ and women’s sports in Iowa with a look back at 6-on-6 girls’ basketball.
