Introduction to High Performance Computing using Neon

The University of Iowa consists of two cluster computers, Neon and Argon (coming in March 2017).  Neon system (2013) consists of 3824 cores and 258 compute nodes and 2 login nodes.

ITS – Research Services is holding a two hour introductory training session on High Performance Computing (HPC) using the Neon Cluster.  This session is intended for anyone who will be running jobs on Neon.  The training session covers the following aspects:

  • How to make the most effective use of HPC resources
  • Connecting to the Neon cluster
  • Launching HPC jobs
  • Getting your data to and from Neon
  • Getting access to the software you need

This training session will be taught be Ben Rogers, Director, ITS-Research Services, and will provide both lecture-based and hands-on training. The session will take place July 17 from 10 AM to 12 PM with a break in the middle and will be located in the IT Training Room (2523) in the UCC Conference Center on the second floor of the Old Capital Mall.

I found the class very helpful. I went into the course with some background on cluster but had not used the cluster before. The course gave simple hands on examples of how to run and kill processes on the cluster. Sai explained how to avoid common pitfalls that new users encounter when using the cluster. I learned a lot about the capabilities of the cluster that I did not previously know. I feel that I can start using the cluster after this introduction. Sai did a good job of answering specific questions that we had about using the cluster.
