Nieh Hualing Engle: From Hubei to the City of Literature

As part of the International Writing Program’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, please join us as for a retrospective look at the wide-ranging impact of IWP co-founder Professor Emerita Nieh Hualing Engle, author of more than twenty works of fiction, non-fiction, and literary criticism and prolific translator. In addition to a reading from her award-winning novel Mulberry and Peach and from her early essays, the event will feature several speakers, including Hong Kong filmmaker Angie Chen, who directed a documentary on Professor Engle’s remarkable journey, “One Tree Three Lives” (2012); and Michelle Vosper, the former director of the Asian Cultural Council’s Hong Kong office, who profiled Professor Engle for Creating Across Cultures: Women in the Arts from China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
