Places & Spaces: Mapping Science

The University of Iowa Main Library Learning Commons will host Places & Spaces: Mapping Science, a digital exhibition featuring compelling visualizations of research data. The exhibition’s maps and images transform big data into viewable narratives that illuminate scientific endeavors, discoveries, and possibilities for the future.

On display February 6 through March 6 in University of Iowa Main Library Learning Commons Group Area B, the Places & Spaces exhibition is co-sponsored by the UI Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and the UI Libraries.

Organized by the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center at Indiana University, Places & Spaces showcases outstanding examples of science maps from around the globe and from diverse disciplines. Innovative and inspiring, these visualizations use data to tell science stories and to point the way to promising new areas of research.

Drawing from across cultures and across scholarly disciplines, the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibition demonstrates the power of maps to address vital questions about the contours and content of human knowledge. Created by leading experts in the natural, physical, and social sciences; visual arts; and the humanities, the maps in Places & Spaces allow us to better grasp the abstract contexts, relationships, and dynamism of science and technology. Individually and as a whole, the maps of Places & Spaces allow data to tell stories that both the scientist and the layperson can understand and appreciate.

Spaces & Places curator Katy Börner is professor of Library and Information Science and founding director of the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Börner will deliver the closing lecture for the exhibition based on her interdisciplinary work that includes statistics, cognitive science, biocomplexity, and visualization.

The closing lecture will be held March 6, 2017 at 7 p.m. in Shambaugh Auditorium at the UI Main Library.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact Katie Hassman in advance at katie-hassman@uiowa.edu.
