Shelter House Education Night
Hi CCOM Community!
As some of you may know, next week (November 13th-17th) is National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. This is a time for us all to start to think about what we are thankful for, a perfect time to share our compassion with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, and work toward a world where no one has to experience hunger or homelessness. As such, Bean Community and its partner organization, Shelter House, have put together several events for next week (with the additional incentive of Olympic Points) for you all to get involved in!
Monday, November 13th - Friday, November 17th: Shelter House Donation Drive
Shelter House has informed us of several items they need this holiday season, listed below:
- Stocking caps
- Warm socks
- Shampoo/conditioner and bar soap
- Toilet paper
- Men's underwear
Starting on Monday at 8am, there will be a box available outside of each community for item collection. There are 500 Olympic Points available to be divided amongst the communities when the drive closes on Friday afternoon at 3pm. Each community will receive the number of points that is proportional to its percentage contribution to the total number of items donated. Shelter House is extremely grateful for our donations, and any lightly used items found at home or even at GoodWill would work perfectly!
Tuesday, November 14th, 6:30pm: Shelter House Education Night
Shelter House has asked 8-10 students to spend an evening educating residents on Stress Management, Personal Health, and Computer Skills. This is an awesome opportunity to learn more about the lives of Shelter House residents in an individual setting while giving back to the community! Wednesday, November 15th, 12:00pm-1:00pm: Homelessness Panel
Join us over the lunch hour in MERF 1110 to listen to a Shelter House panel discussion on why it is so important to help those experiencing homelessness in our community. Panel members this year will include both Shelter House staff as well as individuals who have personal experience with homelessness and are going to share their journey towards overcoming it. Lunch will be served! Community points will be awarded for attendance, and this is an excellent opportunity to fulfill your Wellness Passport requirement for the month!
Lastly, as it is National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, there is an undergrad organization also working to put on events next week in support of Shelter House. Please check them out via there Facebook page here:
Thank you all for your time and attention. Shelter House is extremely grateful for CCOM's support of its endeavors to alleviate the hardships felt by Iowa City's homeless population. Please feel free to reach out to us with any further questions! See you next week!
