This session highlights how concerns unique to international students impact their mental health. These concerns can affect international students’ transition to the University of Iowa, their functioning on campus, and their broader adjustment to the United States. We will explore how the forbearance coping style affects some students’ ability to respond to stressors and interpersonal functioning. We will also explore cultural re-entry issues for students returning from a study abroad.
Participants who attend this session will be able to:
- identify concerns that are unique to international students’ adjustment, and the potential effects on mental health
- describe how the forbearance coping style impacts students’ response to stressors and interpersonal functioning
- ways to be an ally to international students in your role at the university
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
