Phipps is a National Historic Landmark Mill Creek culture site of the Initial Middle Missouri tradition in Cherokee County, Iowa. Excavations at Phipps began in the mid-1950s by University of Iowa (UI) under the direction of Rey Ruppé with later excavations in 1963 and 1998 by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ongoing reanalysis of the collections began in 2017 with the goals of addressing anomalies in the published pottery taxonomy, and tying the ceramics to the stratigraphy in order to model the occupation of this deep ca. A.D. 1100-1200 Mill Creek midden.
