Moser, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology & Neuroscience Program, Michigan State University "Neurocognitive Mechanisms of Self-Regulation in Anxiety: Insights from Studies of Error Monitoring and Emotion Regulation" Abstract: Anxiety is associated with difficulties in self-regulation. Such difficulties can be seen across cognitive and emotional functioning. In my lab, we have focused on demonstrating the difficulties anxiety poses for managing reactions to mistakes and negative emotions using neurocognitive methods. Through these studies, we have identified a general tendency for anxiety to make it harder for individuals to perform tasks efficiently and effectively, depending on the level of difficulty of the task. We have also identified a number of moderators of associations between anxiety and self-regulation dysfunction that suggest important differences across development and gender. Together, these findings have revealed novel mechanisms of self-regulation dysfunction in anxiety that have spurred the application and development of simple, targeted interventions to relieve anxiety’s negative impact on functioning.
