Psychological and Brain Sciences Clinical Area Colloquium Rhonda Boyd, Associate Professor, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Youth Depression and Suicide: Assessment Considerations from a Clinical Research Program Abstract: Youth depression is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorder that has been increasing. Similarly, suicide rates have risen such that it is the second leading cause of death among youth 10-24 years. This presentation will describe prevalence rates, risks and associated characteristics of both depression and suicide in children and adolescents. It will also present a clinical research program for youth with mood difficulties in an outpatient behavioral health clinic. As part of this clinical program, youth and their families’ assessments are included in a data registry. Investigation of assessment issues such as psychometric properties of depression, bullying and negative life events measures, as well as, parent-adolescent discrepancies of family environment and suicidal ideation, will be highlighted. Clinical implications and future research directions will also be discussed.
