Psychological and Brain Sciences Spiker Memorial Lecture Susan C. Levine, Rebecca Anne Boylan Professor in Education and Society, Department of Psychology, University of Chicago Variations in Young Children's Math Knowledge: Cognitive and Emotional Factors Abstract: Children show marked variation in their mathematical knowledge by the start of kindergarten, and these early differences predict long-term mathematical achievement. My research focuses on understanding the factors, both cognitive and emotional, that influence early differences in children’s math knowledge. With respect to cognitive factors, I consider the relation of talk about number and spatial relations at home and at school to variations in children’s math knowledge. With respect to emotional factors, I discuss the relation of teacher and parent math anxiety, as well as the math anxiety of children themselves, in the math achievement of young children.
