Prof. Michael Schudson to deliver 2019 McGranahan Lecture on April 22, 2019

Prof. Michael Schudson of Columbia University will deliver the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's 2019 McGranahan Lecture.  The event is free and open to the public. Prof. Schudson is a renowned journalism scholar, the author of seven books on the history and sociology of the media, and the recipient of multiple honors, including a MacArthur Foundation “genius” Fellowship. You can read more about him here:https://journalism.columbia.edu/faculty/michael-schudson

After offering a definition of ‘the American dream’ (or American ‘dreams’ in the plural) and who is seen as eligible to pursue it, Prof. Schudson's presentation explores criticism of the contemporary media and asks if the media endanger the fulfillment of those dreams by encouraging political polarization, by questioning traditional authority, and by preoccupation with the eccentric and extreme. Do the media, in search of clicks, evoke fears rather than shared dreams? Using the prism of ‘the American dream’ this presentation offers a different and sobering assessment of the role of the news media in society.
