Social science data are spatial data -- the behaviors, processes, and events of interest to social scientists occur at specific geographic locations. This workshop will demonstrate how to model the spatial dimension of these data and of many of our theories in the social sciences. Prof. Darmofal will focus on how to diagnose spatial dependence in social science data -- the existence of similar (or dissimilar) values on variables of substantive interest at neighboring locations and approaches for modeling any spatial dependence that is diagnosed. Examples and code will be provided. Participants should install both the most recent versions of GeoDa & R on their laptops to get the most of out the workshop.

Prof. Darmofal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of South Carolina. His substantive research interests include political behavior, political geography, and American political development; methodological interests include spatial analysis, survival analysis, and time series analysis. He has published numerous articles and two books. His first book, "Spatial Analysis for the Social Sciences", appears in the Analytical Methods for Social Research series at Cambridge University Press and demonstrates how researchers can diagnose and model the spatial dependence implied by many of our theories in the social sciences. His second book, "Demography, Politics, and Partisan Polarization in the United States, 1828-2016", co-authored with Ryan Strickler, is forthcoming in the Springer Spatial Demography book series. His research appears in journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Political Geography, Political Research Quarterly, Political Behavior, Political Psychology, the Journal of Peace Research, and American Politics Research.

This workshop is organized and sponsored by the Iowa Social Science Research Center, part of the UI Public Policy Center, with additional support from the Departments of Geography and Sustainability Sciences, Political Science, and Sociology.
