October 13, 14 at 2:00 p.m.
Space Place Theater

A tradition on campus for 36 years, Dance Gala 2018 promises to captivate audiences of all ages with new dances presented by the University of Iowa’s acclaimed Department of Dance. The program will feature a world-premiere by Chicago-based guest artist Shannon Alvis, choreographed especially for the concert. Original works created by internationally-renowned UI dance faculty will round out the evening.

This year’s Dance Gala will featuring the following works:

The Hedgehog’s Dilemma
Choreography by Charlotte Adams, in collaboration with the dancers and Joseph Novak, Mia Shindler, and Eduardo Zambrana
In Adams’ premiere of The Hedgehog’s Dilemma (or porcupine problem), she premieres a mysterious work of the human longing for intimacy even as our prickly natures force us to keep our distance.  Accompanied by the yearning tones of Hank Williams and film noir scores while cloaked in costumes designed by Margaret Wenk-Kuchlbauer, the seven dancers unveil clues of their deeper desires.

The Love of Souls
Choreography by Shannon Alvis
In The Love of Souls, guest artist Shannon Alvis will share her unique movement style, superb musicality, and detailed craft that are inherent in a work that abstractly explores the soul and spirit within our physical form and the world we live in.

Essência
Choreography by Armando Duarte
Essência was originally created in 2006 and is now being presented in a newly revised version. Inspired by the lines of Blood of Eden by Peter Gabriel, this work explores the many layers involved in a relationship between a man and woman in an abstract garden-like environment.

Not Quite Cunningham
Choreography by Christopher-Rasheem McMillan, in deep collaboration with the dancers
This dance work is a result of embodied research conducted with the Cunningham Trust and was funded in part by the Old Gold Fellowship.

#HowToBeAnAlly
Choreographed and directed by Michael Sakamoto

This performance contains adult language and will use theatrical haze.
