Walt Whitman: A Bicentennial Celebration

Zachary Turpin, University of Idaho, “‘Not a Mark, not a Record Remains’: Walt Whitman’s Most Valuable Lost Works, and Where to Find Them”; Lindsay Tuggle, Western Sydney University (Australia), “‘The dark bequest’: Recovering Whitman’s Traumatic Resilience.” Turpin is the discoverer and editor of two of the most celebrated finds in Whitman Studies: the journalistic series Manly Health and Training and the novel Jack Engle. Tuggle is the author of The Afterlives of Specimens: Science, Mourning, and Whitman’s Civil War (2017).

“Walt Whitman at 200: The Bicentennial Symposium” accompanies the exhibit “Walt Whitman: A Bicentennial Celebration,” University of Iowa Main Library Gallery, curated by Stephanie M. Blalock, Brandon James O’Neil, and Ed Folsom. All events will be held in the Main Library Gallery, first floor, North Entrance.
