Richard, late 50’s, a well-established writer living alone in a rent-stabilized apartment in Park Slope, NYC, meets Seattle, early 30’s, and instantly falls in love, despite Seattle’s insistence on not defining what they are. When Lily, a 9-year old girl, arrives at his doorstep, Richard is forced to confront his past and re-examine his present and hope for the future.

This production contains violence and adult language and themes including sexual violence, mental illness, and suicide.

Iowa New Play Festival readings are free and open to the public. However, you must obtain a ticket and seating is limited. Tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes prior to each reading or during Festival Box Office hours on Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For more than forty years, the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts has presented an annual festival centered on producing, reading, and analyzing new scripts from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop. Preparing eleven new plays and presenting them in a single week is a monumental undertaking that is only possible through the utilization of UI Department of Theatre Arts’ wide-ranging resources in acting, directing, design, dramaturgy, stage management, and technical support. Through staged readings, workshops, and productions, Festival showcases the process of new play development.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
