The Model Minority Myth
Apr 24, 2019
06:00 PM - 08:30 PM
Asian Pacific American Cultural Center
223 Lucon Drive, Iowa City, IA 52246
In celebration of Ascension in Action: APIDA Heritage Month, and as part of APACC's speaker series we present: The Model Minority Myth.
There will be a special video message from Eunice Cho. Eunice is a passionate social studies educator and advocate for APIDA students and teachers alike. She previously taught in Norwalk, California and Passaic, New Jersey, where she was a Teach For America corps member. She went on to serve as a ReadNYC Fellow with United Way of New York City, and is currently a Director of Programs at Teach For America. Eunice holds a BA in American History from University of California, Riverside and M.A. in Secondary Social Studies Education from Biola University.
In addition, Tomy Douangkeo (Co-President of the UIowa Asian American Student Union), will facilitate a presentation created by Eunice to learn about the origins and rise of the model minority myth in immigration policies, capitalism, and anti-black racism. We will then reflect on the implication of the perpetuation of the model minority myth on Asian communities (especially in light of the fact that Asian-America is not a monolith) as well as other communities of color.
There will be FREE food and refreshments! See you there!
