In this opening conference for the Mellon Foundation-funded Sawyer Seminar, six invited scholars of Latina/o/x studies help frame the larger scope of a yearlong conversation about “Imagining Latinidades.” Speakers include the following:

Arlene Dávila is Professor of Anthropology and American Studies at New York University. Her research spans urban ethnography, the political economy of culture and media, consumption, immigration, and geographies of inequality and race.

Valerie Martinez-Ebers is Director of Latina/o and Mexican-American Studies and Professor of Political Science at the University of North Texas and is arguably the top expert on Latina/o/x politics in the United States.

Claudia Milian is Associate Professor of Romance Studies at Duke University. She works in comparative and interdisciplinary studies and forges intersections among the vast intellectual traditions of Latina/o Studies, Latin American Studies, African American Studies, southern studies, and hemispheric American Studies.

Natalia Molina is Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. Her research lies at the intersections of race, gender, culture, and citizenship and her primary scholarly intervention has been to demonstrate the importance of immigration, medicine and regional history on the construction of race in the United States.

Gina Pérez is Professor of Comparative American Studies at Oberlin College. Her work engages the intersections of Latina/o youth, military service, and American national identity; she is currently studying “sanctuary” cities.

Anna Sampaio is Associate Professor and Chair of Ethnic Studies at Santa Clara University. Her work is focused on Latina/o politics, race and gender politics, critical race and gender theory, intersectionality, transnationalism, and immigration; she is currently working on a book examining the history of Latina political participation and activism in the US.

This multi-day event will also coincide with the start of Latina/o Heritage Month (September 15- October 15). Events on Friday 9/20 and Saturday 9/21 will be at the Iowa City Public Library.

The opening keynote will be on Thursday 9/19 at the Iowa City Public Library. See our Sawyer Seminar website at http://imagininglatinidades.com for more information (including a more precise schedule) and to sign-up for our newsletter.
