IN MOTION

November 15, 16 at 8:00 p.m.
Hancher Auditorium

Dance Gala 2019 — IN MOTION — celebrates its 38th anniversary with new works created by distinguished Department of Dance faculty. The concert will feature Women’s Resistance, excerpted from Les écailles de la mémoire (The Scales of Memory) by choreographers Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Germaine Acogny, whose dance company Urban Bush Women encourages civic engagement and social accountability through art. The program will also include an appearance by the enigmatic Laptop Orchestra of the University of Iowa.

(dis)APPEAR(d)ances
Choreography by Jennifer Kayle, with thanks to the cast for collaborative movement development
Digital media design by Daniel Fine
With original music by Joseph Norman, Jonathan Wilson, and Jean-François Charles

The Reaping 6.7
Choreography by Christopher-Rasheem McMillian, in deep collaboration with the dancers

Dream the Wall Away
Choreography by Eloy Barragán, in collaboration with the dancers
With an original score composed by Pieta Brown, Brendan Hanks, Modei Akyea, Eben Seaman
In response to the atmosphere of separation and exclusion.
I decided to invite four composers/musicians from completely different genres to collaborate with me to create an original score with the idea of discussing separation, inclusion, and collaboration. The inspiration and movement research is established through readings, conversation with immigrants about their experiences of separation, and the repercussions that this causes within each individual.
The works is meant to inspire unity, inclusion, and support of one another.

Struggle for Pleasure
Choreography by Armando Duarte, in collaboration with the dancers
With original music composed by Joseph Norman and a live performance by the Laptop Orchestra at the University of Iowa under the musical direction of Jean-François Charles

Out of the Depths
Choreography by Kristin Marrs
This trio is based on relatively recently uncovered events in the life of composer Alban Berg, and the hidden setting of Charles Baudelaire’s De profundis clamavi in Berg’s acclaimed string quartet, Lyric Suite. The dancers engage with Berg’s personal story of forbidden love, his music, and Baudelaire’s text. The choreography explores betrayal, envy, solitude, beauty, and loss.

Women’s Resistance excerpt from Les écailles de la mémoire (The Scales of Memory) (2008)
Choreography by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Germaine Acogny, in collaboration with the original cast

The work student dancers will perform by Zollar and Acogny is presented in collaboration with Hancher Auditorium. Urban Bush Women will perform at Hancher on September 21.

Women’s Resistance was originally created for Urban Bush Women. This performance of Women’s Resistance by the University of Iowa Department of Dance is staged by Urban Bush Women.
