SMART Recovery Meetings are highly interactive, conversational and educational, enabling all participants to share their successes and challenges and receive guidance from others. Meetings are action-oriented, positive and focused on the present and future.

SMART is designed to help people find the power to change within themselves. The discussion at meetings is centered around the SMART 4-Point Program: 1. Build and Maintain Motivation. 2. Cope with Urges. 3. Manage Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors. 4. Lead a Balanced Life.

SMART uses principles, practices, and tools from disciplines with proven effectiveness in treating problematic addictive behavior, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

NOTE*** If you are in an Introduction to Substance Abuse course and need to attend a recovery event, this is not an appropriate meeting to attend for course credit. For more information, email Karen Grajczyk.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
