Paul Kalina (Theatre Arts, CLAS) and Daniel Fine (Digital Arts Cluster) share their project "Media Clown," which premiered in June at the Prague Quadrennial. The event is the largest festival of stage and theatrical design in the world. The project includes two motion-capture suits and a holographic effect screen, all of which aid in Kalina's clown character (think Keaton, not Bozo) "entering" an iPad and becoming part of the digital world.

The two began planning the project during a Summer 2018 Obermann Interdisciplinary Grant. Part of the impetus is to crack what Fine calls the holy grail of life entertainment: how a performer interacts with technology in real time. The project also provides a comedic but thought-provoking consideration of our interaction with technology—how we affect it and it affects us.

Kalina and Fine will show a recording of the Prague performance and discuss the creation of the project as well as next steps in its evolution.
