In conjunction with the Project Passenger Pigeon exhibit, the Old Capitol Museum welcomes guests to a talk by Connie Mutel. Connie will speak on the evolution of climate change and its effects, interweaving our understanding of climate science and Iowa’s landscape transformation.

Billions of passenger pigeons once darkened U.S. skies; yet, under human pressure, the species evaporated a century ago. What can we learn form this tragedy? Today we face equally immense and incomprehensible species and ecosystem declines, with climate change threatening to multiply existing environmental pressures. Join Connie as she explores where we stand now, and what prospects await us humans, our civilization, and the lives of other species. Hopeful answers remain, but only if we attend to the muted voices of species who've suffered human impact.

On this evening we will debut an extension of the exhibit, featuring displays from the UI Office of Sustainability and the Environment on human environmental impacts by way of plastics. The Project Passenger Pigeon exhibit will remain on display through the end of December 2019.

Connie Mutel has written several books about Iowa’s natural history and ecological restoration, including The Emerald Horizon: The History of Nature in Iowa(2008); A Watershed Year: Anatomy of the Iowa Floods of 2008(2010); A Sugar Creek Chronicle: Observing Climate Change from a Midwestern Woodland(2016); and Fragile Giants: A Natural History of the Loess Hills(1989). Before her retirement, she was Senior Science Writer at the University’s IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering, College of Engineering.
