Worldcanvass February 21

Concerns about the present and future danger of the 2019 novel coronavirus will be addressed by an expert panel on a special WorldCanvass called "Coronavirus: Perceptions and Precautions" to be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m., February 21, in 1117 University Capitol Centre (UCC). The event is free and open to the public.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and governmental and medical personnel around the world and here in Iowa are working together to better understand and track the transmission and virulence of this new strain of coronavirus, while, at the same time, providing advice and guidance about how best to control its spread.

Although the number of cases of coronavirus in the U.S. is still very small (12 cases as of February 10), public concern remains strong.  Expert guests from UI Hospitals and Clinics, the Iowa State Hygienic Lab, UI Student Health, and UI International Programs will discuss the virus and its potential for harm here in Iowa as well as the measures the university is taking to inform, protect, and support its students, staff, faculty, and the surrounding community.

Coronavirus: Perceptions and Precautions

Guests:

  • Jorge Salinas—hospital epidemiologist, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
  • Paul Natvig—interim director, Student Health, University of Iowa
  • Michael Pentella—director, Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory; clinical professor, College of Public Health, University of Iowa
  • Russ Ganim—associate provost and dean, International Programs, University of Iowa
