The 2020 Obermann Humanities Symposium, "What Can Museums Become?", will bring together a distinguished group of museum directors, curators, educators and artists who will reflect on the transformative work that museums perform in the twenty-first century.

The closing keynote lecture on Saturday will be delivered by Michelle Kuo, who is the Marlene Hess Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art. In "Future Media of Museums," she will explore the evolving impact of technology on contemporary art and how “new media” artists are raising new and fascinating questions for museum professionals who must work closely with them to install, display, and conserve their genre-bending artworks.

Montse Fuentes, Executive Vice President & Provost, University of Iowa, will introduce the lecture.

Join us after the talk for a closing reception in the Art Building West atrium, 3:30–5:00 p.m.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
