University of Michigan Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan: Process and Implementation
Dr. Robert Sellers
Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer
Charles D. Moody Collegiate Professor of Psychology
University of Michigan
In 2016, the University of Michigan began an historic $85 million diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategic plan to infuse principles of DEI throughout every facet and function of the university. The plan has three goals: 1) to recruit,
retain, and develop more diverse students, faculty, and staff; 2) to create a more equitable and inclusive climate; and 3) to infuse principles of DEI into our teaching, scholarship, and service activities. In his presentation, Dr. Sellers will set the context in which the plan was proposed. He will describe the rationale that was adopted as the argument for why the strategic plan is vital to the future success of the university. Next, he will provide brief descriptions of the planning process, the structure of the plan, as well as the process by which the plan has been implemented. Finally, he will provide examples of key plan initiatives and programs that have been enacted in the context of updating the plan’s progress to date. The session will conclude with a discussion of lessons learned from the plan. The goal of the session is to provide a concrete foundation upon which to discuss institutional approaches to address issues of DEI.
