Ten-Minute Play Festival
By Undergraduate Playwrights

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts is proud to present the 24th annual Ten-Minute Play Festival. Join us for the premiere of these new works by our undergraduate playwrights!

The following plays will be presented this year:

A Part
Written and directed by Alexis Vaselopolous
Two friends discuss their complicated and turbulent past as friends before one of them leaves forever. An absurdist take about reconciliation and the roles we play to appease others.

Blossom This Orange Menagerie
By Hannah Olsson
Directed by Annalisa Laird
Blossom This Orange Menagerie reconceptualizes the words of The Bright Hour: A Memoir of Living and Dying by Nina Riggs and Last Words of the Executed by Robert K. Elder to contemplate what people say to death when it stands near. In considering the words of the dead, and the last words they will ever say, two caged-circus things become trapped together by a commandeering Ringmaster, a common guilt of wrongs committed, and a common fear of an empty somewhere— or nowhere— beyond.

come back
By Jivani Rodriguez
Directed by Jessie Shaw
come back is a short grief play about life and death, moving on, and what it means to love and be loved. It's also a silly piece about two rabbits and a little girl.

Investigative Crustacean Salinization: Postmodern Underwater Murder Party
By Jacob Smithburg
Directed by Thomas Young
This just under! Reports are in that a local crab has got got by the Brine Pool Caper! Follow the investigation of Scientist 2 and the buffoonery of Scientists 1 and 3. Keep an eye out for Lobster Publicist and other colorful characters such as Scientist 1 and. . . Scientist 3. . . again, baybee! Grab your favorite undersea Trader Joe’s exclusive, a tall glass of saltwater, and get ready to submerge yourself in an aquatic fever dream like no other. So watch your step by the brine pool, blast some Ziggy Stardust during the credits because we couldn’t afford to license it, and (never actually) learn what salinization means!

Lighthearted
By Cheyenne Mann
Directed John Lyons
Lighthearted is a surrealist piece about a woman's tedious relationship with her emotions. After scheduling a surgical procedure to remove her emotions, a mime and her skin desperately try to get her to see the light.

Soda Pop
Written and directed by Meg Mechelke
A raincoat, a bored employee, and the Moon’s ex-girlfriend walk into a 7/11 at two in the morning on a Tuesday or a Wednesday when it’s raining.
