UI Theatre Arts Spring 2021 Auditions

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts will hold auditions virtually for all its spring 2021 productions, most of which are new works. Auditions may be uploaded anytime from Wednesday, November 4 to midnight on Friday, November 6. Auditions are open to everyone, including non-majors and the general public. Please see below for additional specific casting needs. These auditions are an excellent opportunity to learn more about UI Theatre and to perform in mainstage, gallery, and workshop productions, as well as staged readings and other special projects.  

Auditions for University of Iowa Theatre Arts productions are open to everyone. For academic considerations, priority is given to theatre majors first, and then all other students of the University of Iowa. Members of the greater Iowa City community are also strongly encouraged to audition. There are many excellent roles available throughout the year and many non-majors and actors from the surrounding community are cast each season. Occasionally, professional guest actors will also be employed.

In all disciplines and areas of theatrical production, the Department of Theatre Arts seeks to include persons of every race, color, culture, age, gender, creed, physical disability and sexual orientation. The department is committed to Non-Traditional Casting to expand opportunities for women, actors of color, and actors with disabilities in roles where race, gender, or the presence or absence of a disability is not germane.

SPECIFIC CASTING NEEDS

Skeleton Closet by Matthew Neal
Synopsis:
After his abusive father's suicide, Scott struggles to untangle his feelings of grief from his trauma, and his trauma from his Trans identity. This, paired with Scott's transphobic and oblivious mother and the return of his ex-girlfriend, forces Scott to face his past, present, and future, in order to heal.
Role:
One of the characters in Skeleton Closet is a Trans man, therefore should be played by a Trans masculine person. SCOTT: A college student. Struggling with the death of his father and his own gender identity. Trans masculine.

The Untitled Grant Wood Fellow Project
Synopsis:
Grant Wood Fellow, Margarita Blush, will lead the team into creating a highly visual and poetic theatrical expression of a theme which the collaborators find interesting and important to our lives and the world we live in. This ensemble-generated project invites collaborators to step out of the realm of traditional theatre and take a journey to make the invisible visible through passion, curiosity, inventiveness, and humanity.
Role:
This project is inclusive to anyone. The only thing the director needs is the full investment and dedication of the team.
