Photograph of a Microphone

Calling all podcasters, podcast enthusiasts, and podcast newbies! Learn from expert podcasters about the craft of podcasting with purpose, from the nuts and bolts of recording and editing audio to the intellectual and creative labor of audio storytelling. As part of our goal to prepare graduate students for a wide range of careers serving the public good, Humanities for the Public Good is exploring new and innovative methods of interpretation, storytelling, and meaning-making. The Podcasting with Purpose series will bring experienced podcast creators and hosts each month in Spring 2021 to discuss their craft and how academics can connect their research, teaching, and advocacy with the wide world of podcasting. This series is supported by Humanities for the Public Good, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies.

Rebecca Nagle is a writer, activist, and audio journalist. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation based in Oklahoma, she is the creator and host of the Crooked Media podcast This Land which focuses on the case of Carpenter v. Murphy, a 2020 U.S. Supreme Court decision that resulted in the largest restoration of tribal land in U.S. history, nearly half the land in Oklahoma. Season One of This Land traces how two crimes collide — an 1839 assassination of a Cherokee leader and a 1999 small town murder — in an investigation into the treaty rights of five Native American tribes that led all the way to the Supreme Court. Nagle's work has appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today, Teen Vogue, The Guardian, the Boston Globe, and more. Her organizing and advocacy work has been recognized and covered by outlets such as NBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, NPR, Indian Country Today, and The Huffington Post. In 2016, Nagle was named one of the National Center American Indian Enterprise Development’s Native American 40 Under 40 for her work to address violence against Native women.
