Learning Objectives
1) Participants will increase their knowledge of the legal and ethical principles that inform decision-making and actions as mental health professionals. 2) Participants will learn strategies for assessing and managing clients at risk of suicide and homicide. Strategies will include ways to decrease your legal risk while simultaneously providing excellent care to your clients and adhering to ethical principles. 3) Participants will gain knowledge of the mental health commitment process. 4) Participants will be able to consider alternatives to hospitalization for at risk clients. 5) Participants will be able to apply the principles of ‘Duty to Warn’ doctrine in their professional practice. 6) Participants will improve their ability to resolve ethical dilemmas by utilizing an ethical decision-making model.

About the Instructor: Wade Kuehl, MSW, LISW
Wade Kuehl has 26 years of experience working in mental health care and is currently the Director of Psychological Health at the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa. He has previously served as the Director of Behavioral Health at Mercy Medical Center, and as the Clinical Director at Siouxland Mental Health Center, both also in Sioux City, Iowa. Kuehl earned a B.S. in Psychology and Criminal Justice in 1993 and a Masters in Social Work in 2000.
