White Supremacy Characteristics in Social Work Organizations

Event Summary:
Social Work is a field which has benefited historically and presently from white privilege (with a nationwide workforce that is more than 70% white) and which operates within a system of white supremacy. Attendees will be challenged in a supportive and intensive environment which will move them into actively anti-racist work. Group participation required.

Learning Objectives:
1.) Discuss and analyze how social work has been shaped by white supremacy
2.) Identify and analyze white supremacy characteristics in social work organizations
3.) Build concrete plans to disrupt white supremacy in social work organizations.

About the Instructor:
Alyssa Clayden, MSW, LISW, PhD Candidate

Alyssa has been working in the field of refugee mental health for 20 years in a variety of roles and across five continents. Alyssa is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW),and PhD candidate at the University of Iowa with a research focus in refugee mental health and systemic issues in health and practice which reduce efficacy of refugee mental health care. She has presented nationally and internationally on mental health research, suicide and trauma. Alyssa's research focuses on the role of white supremacy and colonialism in the disparities in care for refugees and immigrants in the U.S.

Alyssa works with Physicians for Human Rights and works across the United States providing asylum assessments for both free and detained asylum seekers. Alyssa is also the Executive Director of ABCD Therapy & Consultation, an Iowa agency that provides transcultural education and technical assistance for agency diversity and equity outcomes, and education in increasing provider skills and resiliency in providing refugee health and mental health care. Alyssa focuses on working toward amplifying the voices of refugee and immigrant communities in the US context, addressing white supremacy characteristics in local organizations, and providing support and consultation groups to professionals, interpreters, and to refugee and immigrant community members to enhance mutual understanding and reduce miscommunication and burnout.
