"Death, Deprivation, and Rational Regret"
Abstract: According to a popular account of the badness of death (the "deprivation account") death is bad for you because it deprives you of the good things in life that would otherwise have come your way. But we don't normally consider it a misfortune that some good thing that might have happened didn't happen. For example, I didn't get a check in the mail for a million dollars today; but that's hardly a misfortune! One possible solution turns on the suggestion that the less likely it was that the good thing would happen, the more the amount of your regret should be reduced. In this talk we'll explore that attractive idea and consider different ways of spelling it out.
