Percussionist Derek Dreier is an eclectic musician and educator versed in a variety of musical traditions. Derek has a passion for teaching and outreach as well as a deep commitment to his craft.

In June of 2017 Derek was named Assistant Principal Percussionist of the Omaha Symphony. In addition to his work with the symphony, Derek performs with the Omaha Chamber Music Society and is a freelance drum set and world percussion artist. In 2017 Derek co-founded Tributary, a collection of jazz musicians dedicated to spiritually informed music. Derek is the Percussion Instructor at Creighton University. 

Derek's primary teachers include, Boston Symphony percussionist Will Hudgins, former National Symphony timpanist John Tafoya, Afro-Cuban specialist Michael Spiro, all-around percussion virtuoso Dane Richeson and drum set and latin percussionist artist (and father) James Dreier. He holds degrees from Lawrence University and Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music and completed two years of post-graduate work at the New England Conservatory.

   
 

 

James Dreier is a drum set-Latin percussion specialist, educator, clinician, and performer. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) and a Master of Arts degree in music theory from the University of Iowa.

As an Associate Professor of Instruction (jazz) at the University of Iowa, Dreier’s duties include teaching Jazz Improvisation for Drum Set, Jazz Cultures in America and Abroad, and directing the Latin-jazz Ensemble. He also performs frequently with a variety of bands and ensembles, including Three Dogs and a Bone, the UI Jazz Faculty group, The Beaker Brothers Band and his own Latin jazz band, Rtimocano. 

Dreier published his book, Latin Jazz Guide, A Path To Authentic Percussion and Ensemble Performance (Hal Leonard Corp.) in October 2015 as well as two CDs, Familia (2014, Realtown Records) and Iowa Friends/Cuban Music (2020, self-released)

Dreier will publish his second book, Standard Tune Learning Sequence, A Musical Approach to Improvisation for Jazz Drummers, in August of 2021.
