Domenico Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto

*Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Il matrimonio segreto premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 7 February 1792, just two months after Mozart’s death. It received immediate accolades, particularly from Emperor Leopold II, who commanded an encore performance of the entire opera that day for a private audience.

Adapted from stageagent.com:
Carolina and Paolino have been secretly married for two months and they are looking for the right time to tell Carolina’s father, Signor Geronimo, about their union. Paolino has a plan: As Geronimo’s secretary, he has been making arrangements for Carolina’s older sister, Elisetta, to marry the eminent Count Robinson (Il Conte Robinson). He is sure that when this marriage goes ahead, Geronimo, who is eager to have one of his daughters marry a titled nobleman, will be so pleased that they will be able to reveal their secret. Unfortunately, when the Count meets the sisters, he has other ideas. To add to the confusion, Geronimo’s sister Fidalma has her eye on Paolino!

This operatic farce to rival Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro sees all six characters getting into awkward situations or being caught in compromising positions until the truth finally must come out. Cimarosa’s excellent score bubbles along to Bertati’s hilarious libretto and makes this an excellent work for everyone to enjoy.
