It is important to understand Indigenous law and policy in order to advocate on behalf of Native American, First Nations, Indigenous, and Aboriginal communities.  Native Nations in the US have their own constitutions and laws.  Some efforts are being made on decolonizing tribal government structures.  For example, within the Anishinaabe Nation, there is a focus on Anishinaabe law which would include clan relations, clan leadership, traditional councils, and a more traditional form of governance.  Indigenous law and policy must work with colonial governments.  The relationship between the past, present, and future legal systems must be understood so we can collectively move beyond the suppression, criminalization, and erasure of Indigenous law and policy.
