Stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) are used to study cochlear amplification, but interpreting these measurements requires understanding where SFOAEs originate along the cochlea. The SFOAE is separated from the stimulus by making some key assumptions and using various signal manipulations. Here, we report on SFOAEs extracted using a standard method compared with a novel pharmacologic method. The physiology of the cochlea and auditory nerve can be assessed with electrocochleography (ECochG), a technique that involves measurement with an electrode placed near, on, or within the cochlea. Despite the common use of ECochG, the variability of repeated measurements from individuals or groups of participants is not well understood. Here, we use a Bayesian model to guide the determination of sample sizes for ECochG-based studies.
