Ryan Policheri portrait - submitted

You are invited to a seminar by Ryan Policheri, MCS in Computer Science, who is working on an independent investigation with Jerry Schnoor on data networking the energy system at UI.

Abstract: University of Iowa calculates its carbon emissions on an annual basis to meet reporting requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). However research has shown that measuring or calculating carbon emissions in real-time can be used to support various optimizations in battery storage, cloud computing, and other energy intensive operations. This presentation demonstrates process modeling software built in collaboration with ENGIE to model university energy systems using data from a system’s digital twin or other sources. We show that process models built in this software can be used to both calculate real-time emissions and to generate emission factors of different energy resources (i.e. electric, steam, chilled water, etc.); this enhanced level of granularity can be used to support real-time carbon optimizations at the university. We also show that the flexibility of the modeling software can be leveraged to predict the effects of changes to an energy system.

George Paterson and Melissa Gilmartin from ENGIE (a member of University of Iowa Energy Collaborative - UIEC) have helped him considerably.
