Transforming an Acorn into an Oak

This uniquely educational webinar will provide the 'recipe' for everyone interested in transforming an acorn into an oak tree—with their own hands—and watching it start to grow within 30 days. This keystone tree plays an important role in our environment, and together, with a presentation from Doug Tallamy, and the talents of WMT's radio news host Doug Wagner, we will provide the instruction you need to get started.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about growing Iowa's nave oak trees from Doug Tallamy.
  2. Monarch Research will give away 4,000 acorns to participants to begin growing their own oak tree.
  3. Webinar participants will be able to pick up acorns from the Monarch Research Station, Indian Creek Nature Center, or Linn County Conservation Wikiup Hill, which they can plant indoors in a south-facing window and transplant in May.

Topics Covered Include:

  • Understanding the importance of oaks – lecture and firsthand account by Doug Tallamy
  • What do you get when you transform an acorn?
  • The transformation process – the recipe for successful acorn growth
  • How to get your acorns from Monarch Research and partners
