Four teenage Black girls in denim and leather stand in front of a white background.

Join Bijou Film Board and the UI's Advanced French Cinema course for our co-presentation of Girlhood (2014), from the acclaimed director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)!

Marieme joins an all-girl gang in the projects of Paris and is slowly turned out of her shell by her three sassy neighbours. As she falls further under their bravado and volatile energy, she begins making brave and foolish choices.

Bijou Film Board is a nonprofit, student-run organization dedicated to the exhibition of independent, foreign, and classic cinema. Our Partnership series allows us to connect with organizations on campus and in the greater Iowa City community to bring special cinematic events to the University of Iowa, promoting film education and conversation.

The University of Iowa Department of French & Italian occasionally offers coursework in French cinema. Some of these courses are open to non-majors, and some may be taught in English. Any student interested in taking French cinema courses should contact their academic advisor to discuss what course options might be available to you!

All Bijou programming is FREE for UI students and $8 for the general public, screened at FilmScene (at the Chauncey) at 404 E College St.

Free student tickets for Partnership films must be claimed at the door. To purchase general admission tickets in advance, visit the FilmScene website at ic.filmscene.org/series-special-events/ .

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
