A Surprising Connection: Mathematical Coloring Problems & Supersymmetry!
Professor Jim Gates
Clark Leadership Chair in Science, Distinguished University Professor and Regents Professor
Department of Physics, University of Maryland
The four-color theorem in mathematics began as a conjecture in 1852 but did not have proof until 1976. The proof involved a historical first since it required a computer program! A related problem is the color vertex problem. Within this past year it has been realized that this last problem is surprisingly connected to the subject of supersymmetry. This is the subject of this colloquium.
