Join us on Earth Day for Art Education Community and Family Earth Day

Graduate students from the University of Iowa College of Education will lead a range of activities, from creating an art passport to weaving with found natural materials.

Programs will be geared towards a variety of audiences including young children and their families, K-12 students, and adults.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS & TIMES

Sketchbook Creation with Monica David, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Create your own souvenir sketchbook made from vintage postcards, recycled paper, and a simple string binding. Complete a series of sketchbook prompts during your visit to the museum and receive a prize at the end!

Bilateral Drawing with Morgan Forbes, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Take off your shoes and draw awhile! Come to the Stanley and reconnect with the earth and both sides of your brain as we explore bilateral drawing while barefoot in the grass or on paper. This is a drop-in activity.

Movement Sculpture at the Stanley with Megan Dehner, 10:30 & 11:30

Have you ever felt like you had to stay still and quiet when you are around art? Let's change that! Come join the Stanley Museum of Art as we look at, move with, talk about, and be inspired by some of the 3D artworks on display.

Nature Weaving with Madison Chicoine, noon – 2 p.m.

At this drop-in activity, participants will have the opportunity to weave natural materials into a large community loom. Visitors can then explore the various woven exhibits in The Stanley Art Museum.

Remembered Landscape Drawing with Carolyn Henry, noon & 1 p.m.

Gain a new appreciation for abstract art and create some of your own by engaging in this hands-on art workshop in which abstract drawings of a remembered landscape will be made. This 30-minute workshop is suitable for all ages and will include creating a temporary mural of attendees’ creations.

Ebb & Flow: Move Like the River with Allison Rowe, 12:30 & 1:30 p.m.

During this active, 30-minute tour children and families will explore the ways that water has influenced the Stanley Museum of Art and the works in its collection. Participants will be invited to move their bodies, use their imaginations, and dive into some new ways of thinking about water.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
