queer stories, queer joy, and the archival value of happiness

Join Anna Holland, associate curator of the Iowa Women’s Archives, for a free virtual lunchtime talk on June 1 at noon. Advance registration required to receive the event link: Register Here

The current Main Library Gallery exhibition, Out & About: Queer Life in Iowa City, briefly explores several decades of local queer history and includes a large selection of original items from the Iowa Women’s Archives. While many collections in IWA contain clear documentation of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights, these archival sources also reveal heartwarming instances of queer joy and happiness.

Holland’s presentation will share a more in-depth investigation of queer life in Iowa City as represented in the Iowa Women’s Archives, and will discuss the archival value that makes this evidence of happiness indispensable in collecting Iowa’s history.
