Part of Hancher's 51st season

Newly minted Pulitzer Prize winner and MacArthur “Genius” Rhiannon Giddens’ lifelong mission is to lift up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been erased. She is working toward a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins. Pitchfork says, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration,” and Smithsonian Magazine calls her “an electrifying artist who brings alive the memories of forgotten predecessors, white and black.”

Hancher audiences first met her as co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. Since 2020, she has been the artistic director of the famed Silkroad Ensemble, succeeding Yo-Yo Ma in that role. Her new television series, My Music with Rhiannon Giddens, airs on PBS and features musical performances and conversations with outstanding guest artists filmed on location around the South. She returns to Iowa City fronting a full band in support of her recent Nonesuch release You’re the One, the follow-up to her Grammy-winning They’re Calling Me Home.

Adia Victoria will open for Giddens. Victoria leans into the rich legacy of Black Southern blues even as she pushes that tradition forward. Producer T Bone Burnett says of her, “Adia Victoria sings on an arc between Memphis Minnie and Sojourner Truth.”
