The recent success of the University of Iowa’s women’s basketball team generated excitement and interest in women’s sports across the community. Before there was NCAA women’s basketball, there was 6-on-6 girls basketball, a form of the sport that the state of Iowa remained committed to until 1993. This Obermann Conversation with University of Iowa faculty, basketball coach, and former players, will contextualize the past, discuss the present, and look forward to the future of women’s basketball in Iowa. We present this conversation in anticipation of our 2023 Obermann Arts & Humanities Symposium, Sports, Power, and Resistance: Legacies and Futures (Sept. 21-23).

Panelists:

  • Susan Birrell (Professor Emeritus, American Studies & Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies)
  • Heather Heddens (Basketball Player, Mediapolis, 1973)
  • Jane Rubel (Basketball Player, Ruthven, 1972)
  • Jennifer Sterling (Associate Professor of Instruction, American Studies & Journalism and Mass Communication)
