The program “What’s the risk? Understanding medically complex patients in your practice” provides an up to date overview of various medical conditions you may encounter in your office. Discussions will include appropriate antibiotic prescribing, cardiac conditions, central nervous system conditions, medications causing bleeding, and other conditions like diabetes and cancer. The goal of the program is to review current literature and dental recommendations so you can feel more comfortable providing care to medically complex dental patients.

Program Objectives

At the completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Define the immunocompromised patient.
  • Understand current prescribing recommendations for antibiotics
  • Understand dental management recommendations for patients following cardiovascular and cerebrovascular accidents.
  • Recognize and manage patients taking antiplatelet  and anticoagulant medications.
  • Understand the association between diabetes, oral health, and systemic health.
  • Identify patients at risk for medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) or osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and understand dental considerations for treatment.
