Part I: Beyond Bonding: Resin Cement in Modern Dentistry
This CE lecture will review commonly used resin cements and their clinical applications, as well as their bonding protocols with different restorative materials to achieve consistent and successful results in the modern-day dental practice.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Understand the composition of resin cement;
- Identify the types and classifications of resin cements available in the market;
- Review surface treatment and bonding protocols for different restorative materials;
- Analyze bond strengths achievable with different resin cements and restorative materials; and
- Identify and troubleshoot challenges associated with resin cementation.
Part II: From Hues to Hardness: Understanding Color and Mechanical Properties in Dental Materials
This course will review the fundamentals of color in dentistry by exploring the dimensions of color, including value, chroma, and hue. The course will review the mechanical properties of dental materials and delve into the mechanical aspects crucial for successful dental restorations. We will discuss the latest advancements in dental materials, including 3D-printed zirconia and digital workflows. Real-world scenarios will be used to address the challenges in clinical decision-making and dental material selection.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Understand the optical and mechanical characteristics that define dental materials' performance in resin composite and ceramic;
- Understand the role of translucency, opalescence, and fluorescence in achieving aesthetic excellence;
- Understand fracture strength, toughness, wear resistance, and other mechanical parameters of dental materials;
- Evaluate the impact of technology on material homogeneity and structural integrity; and
- Apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios, addressing challenges in clinical decision-making and dental material selection.
Dr. Nikkita Madhu holds a DDS degree from Ajman University, United Arab Emirates and a Certificate in Prosthodontics and Master's in Dental Science from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, New Jersey. She is a published author in Quintessence International. Dr. Madhu joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry as an Assistant Professor and teaches predoctoral and postgraduate students at the College of Dentistry. She also provides patient care in the Department of Prosthodontics Faculty Practice.
Dr. Franciele Floriani obtained a DDS degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in 2010, with specializations in Prosthodontics in 2012 and Operative Dentistry in 2015. She completed a Master’s degree in 2019 and a PhD in 2022, focusing on dental materials research. In 2021, undertook a visiting research position in Dental Materials at the University of Florida. From 2021 to 2022, successfully completed the Dentsply Implant Fellowship Program in the Periodontology Department at the University of Florida. Continuing the fellowship, in 2022-2023, completed the Dentsply Implant Fellowship Program in the Prosthodontics Department. Engages in clinical practice at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry faculty practice and concurrently serves as an Assistant Professor, contributing to the education of predoctoral and postgraduate students at the dental school.
