9:30 a.m.             The Impact of the 21st Century Diet: Nutritional Challenges on Health Equity

Overview: Focusing on the dietary trends in the 21st Century, this course will provide a high-level overview of current dietary trends that challenge the goals of Health Equity. Dr. Harvey will review how achieving health equity is integral to eliminating preventable health disparities. Additionally, make the argument that the topic of health equity is essential in all discussions related to medical and dental integration.

At the end of the program, participants should be able to:

• Overview of the trends in the 21st Century Diet
• Overview of the Link Between dietary trends and common oral health diseases
• Overview of the Link Between dietary trends and system diseases
• Provide a brief overview what Health equity is and its goals
• Provide an example on the relationship between dietary trends, SES, and health disparities
• Understand the importance of the relationship between achieving health equity to eliminate preventable health disparities.
• Understand the importance of integrating health equity into the discussion of medical and dental integration.

10:30 a.m.       An Update in Endodontics - What's Changed?

Overview: Change is inevitable - How has endodontics changed in the last 15 years? Technology, methods, boredom ... let's discuss the effect they all have on the specialty.

At the end of this program, participants should be able to:

• Review and contrast developments in endodontics over the past 15 years, to better understand how we arrived at our current best-evidence for patient-centered treatment.
• Recognize the increasing role of technologies in data collection, case planning, and execution of treatment.
• Discuss how trends and emerging issues in endodontics will affect the plan of care into the future.

11:30 a.m.       Teenage Patients, the Conundrum

Overview: Teenagers provide an interesting conundrum in dentistry. They have adult teeth and adult dental problems, but they are still growing and developing socially, emotionally, and physically. This session will discuss the opportunities for treating teenage dental patients. 

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

• Discuss social and emotional differences between adolescent and adult patients.
• Determine treatment philosophies for teenage dental patients for a general dentist.
• Identify opportunities for general dentists to grow their adolescent dental practice.
