University of Iowa Music Youtubers and Podcasters on The Art and Practice of Content Creation
Dec 13, 2024
01:30 PM - 02:30 PM
93 East Burlington Street, Iowa City, IA 52240
Did you know that the DrKatiMeyerMusicTheory YouTube videos and podcasts FilmCastPodScene, Sounding Cinema, and Ethnomusicology Today are all written and produced by University of Iowa School of Music Faculty? That’s 50 YouTube videos, 55 podcast episodes, and at least 8,690 watchers/listeners between them!
In this roundtable discussion, Kati Meyer, Nathan Platte, and Trevor Harvey will reflect on their experiences as content creators, responding to questions about audience, creative process, and what it is like to undertake this kind of public-facing, but still scholarly, work. Join us for a continuing conversation about writing, making, and promoting this kind of public-facing music research content. Additional topics include, but are not limited to, the logistics of content creation (e.g., copyright, video/recording equipment), the additional opportunities of working with community partners, and the ongoing task of making posted content on the internet more visible.
Presenters:
Dr. Kati Meyer is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Music’s Theory Area, where her diverse teaching strategies and individualized relationship building cultivate a unique learning experience for UI’s music students. As part of her pedagogy, Dr. Meyer has created many “flipped classroom” videos for students that she has also published on her YouTube channel DrKatiMeyerMusicTheory. With 50 videos and over 8.5K subscribers, Dr. Meyer’s YouTube channel is a resource for the novice musician to learn more about music theory from an informed source.
Nathan Platte is the co-founder, co-host, and producer of two podcasts. For FilmCastPodScene (2020-23), Nathan worked with staff at FilmScene, Iowa City’s independent movie theater, to craft episodes around FilmScene's programming, including interviews with filmmakers and musicians about their work. In Sounding Cinema (2020-), Nathan and student cohosts explore our relationship to music and sound in film. Episode formats vary depending on topic and students' goals, ranging from panel discussions to scripted analyses to interviews with researchers. Nathan published a reflection on podcasting in the 40th-anniversary issue of American Music titled, “Podcasts, Partnerships, and Laboratories for American Music.”
