The Atiyah-Patodi-Index Theorem for Staggered Fermions

Hersh Singh, PhD; Fermilab

The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index theorem, a generalization of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem to manifolds with boundary, plays a central role in understanding anomaly inflow for fermionic topological phases. In this talk, I will present a "physics" derivation of the APS index theorem for Kahler-Dirac (KD) fermions, which are of growing interest in lattice gauge theory due to their potential use in constructing lattice chiral gauge theories. Using a recent extension of Fujikawa's method to manifolds with boundary, we will discuss how the two distinct chiral symmetries of KD fermions and their anomalies are connected to the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the Hirzebruch signature theorems, and shed light on the nature of their boundary contributions.
