Understanding the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
In April, the Department of Justice published new regulations that call for institutions of higher education to make all digital content, with few exceptions, accessible by April 2026 for larger institutions and April 2027 for certain smaller schools and populations. The regulations identify the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Version 2.1, Level AA (WCAG 2.1 AA) as the accessibility standard for compliance with the new rule.
This session will focus on building awareness and understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA and a constellation of support resources and tools. After completing this session, participants will:
- Know where to access resources to help them understand the guidelines;
- Understand how to identify the success criteria and techniques for conformance with each guideline;
- Identify guidelines and techniques that are relevant to their project or work efforts;
- Identify and use testing tools to begin assessing the success of their accessibility efforts.
WCAG 2.1, Level AA is not a complete fix for every accessibility issue, but the guidelines offer a path to better accessibility across a spectrum of technologies. Join T.M. Weissenberger at the University of Iowa for this deep exploration into the world of WCAG and see how you can leverage the guidelines to help meet your institutional goals and be ready for April 2026.
