Children with unique linguistic backgrounds are not served by the current state of language assessment that often relies on standardized tests scored against large normative samples that, by their very nature, only represent the prevailing majorized group. As a result, non-standardized techniques are often recommended for minoritized groups, such as multilingual learners or children who use understudied languages.

However, local community norming could offer a realistic solution to this critical representation challenge in language assessment. In this talk, we share the initial outcomes of
two community norming projects: a local project in Iowa City in collaboration with the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and an international collaboration.
