"Some Statistical Problems in the Geosciences"
Abstract: I will give an overview of three unrelated problems requiring new statistical developments in the geosciences. The first involves creation of ubiquitous digital elevation models when multiple incompatible estimates of elevations are available. A second problem relates to tropical cyclones (TCs), highly destructive storms that threaten life and infrastructure throughout many coastal regions. I discuss a statistical approach to generating high resolution space-time trajectories of TC precipitation given a small handful of variables common in storm track databases that can be used in downstream risk estimation studies. The final problem involves quantification of space-time solar irradiance variability and intermittency to better understand electrical grid impacts in areas with high penetration of distributed photovoltaics.
Meet and Greet at 3:00 p.m. in 241 SH. Colloquium at 3:30 p.m. in 61 SH.
